WHAT WILL HAPPEN DURING THE APPOINTMENT.

We will first go through a list of medical questions with you. This is to help us understand whether there are any medical reasons why microsuction or irrigation might not be suitable for you. Before we proceed, we will fully inform you of any potential side effects.

The clinician will then have a look in your ears using an otoscope, which is a magnification tool with a light on it. We also use live video imaging camera to show you before and after the procedure.

If the wax is too hard and impossible to remove on the same day, we might advise you to use wax softening drops such as medicated olive oil drops before booking you in for a second appointment.

Please ensure you speak to a healthcare professional before using wax softening drops.

CAUSES OF EAR WAX BUILD UP

Some people naturally produce more ear wax.

Other causes include:

  • Having narrow ear canals

  • Having dry or hard ear wax

  • Excessive ear hair

  • Frequent use of earplugs or hearing aids

  • Using cotton swabs to clean your ears

  • Inflamed ear canal (otitis externa or swimmer's ear)

  • Skin conditions affecting your scalp or skin around your ears
